Sega Gubben, a candy store in Gothenburg. "Gubben" is like a term of endearment for an old man, or even a little child. I'm not sure if there is an english equivalent.

March 25 is Waffle Day ("Våffledagen" in Swedish)
Apparently, this holiday was originally called "Our Lady's Day" or "Vårfrudagen" in Swedish. Then it became slurred and changed to "Våffledagen". It became the day that just about every Swede takes out his/her waffle iron and celebrates "the day of the waffle". Waffles are either topped with sweet (chocolate, nutella, syrup or jam) or savory (cream cheese and salmon) toppings. The waffles come in various shapes, from heart shaped waffle or rectangular to thin round or clover-shaped waffles.
There is a cozy little cafe called "The Waffle Cafe" (Våffelcafé Soldattorpet) at the top of Skansberget. It's right next to the Skansen Kronan (see my past blog). They offer hot coffee and fresh homemade waffles. You can eat there or take it with you as your explore the grounds around Skansen Kronan or check out the views!
Another good waffle place is a small cafe at Vasaplatsen called "Waffles". They offer various toppings from Chocolate and fruits to even a scoop or two of ice cream on your waffles! Smells delicious everytime you walk by. Only indoor seating is available but you can always take your waffles with you and sit on a bench nearby.
The American style diner, "Egg & Milk", serves delicious breakfast/lunch options with a few Vegan options too. They offer North American-style pancakes and Do-it-Yourself waffles! There is a covered, outdoor seating area infront of the restaurant. This place is very kid-friendly with high chairs available for little ones to use inside or outside. Note: During the Pandemic, you need to wait outside until it's your turn to order.
Whether you enjoy a waffle from the comfort of your home, eat outdoors at a cafe, or just get a take away, enjoy your waffle today! Many cafes all over the city offer waffles and they make a great snack. :) Happy Waffle Day! And remember, don't forget your snacks!

We have been really lucky to live near a pretty amazing little bakery called AweSum Cakes. The first time I heard about this bakery was from a friend when I was planning my daughter's birthday.
For that birthday, we decided to just order some mini cupcakes to try the bakery out. We got a mix of chocolate cupcakes some with chocolate icing and some with butterscotch and then some vanilla cupcakes with pink icing. The chocolate icing with the chocolate cupcakes was so delicious and those went pretty quickly! The vanilla ones were the perfect size for the little kids hands.
When the pandemic started last year, we started to self isolate. I saw an post about this bakery advertising they can make Vegan cupcakes. Just as many businesses had been struggling during the Pandemic, AweSum Cakes, needed some customers. I had been looking for some Vegan desserts for myself, so I had to try the Vegan cupcakes!
I have never regretted it! Since then I've been ordering different cupcakes and even the cake-in-the-box whenever I felt like I needed a nice treat. We would also stop by the shop when we felt like a treat on the way home. Sumana knows my daughter loves pink cupcakes and several times she has even put icing on a cupcake just for her.
For their Pandemic birthdays in 2020, we ordered our kids' birthday cakes from AweSum Cakes. Having a delicious custom birthday cake, even if it was just for us, really made the Pandemic birthdays special.
For my daughter's birthday, we ordered Unicorn cupcakes for the guests to keep it as safe as possible. We celebrated outdoors at our neighbourhood park with just a few kids from her preschool. We saved the cake just for us.
The hornless unicorn cupcake above is Vegan :)
When I initially asked my daughter about her birthday cake theme, she said she wanted a unicorn and rainbow on her cake. Days later she said she wanted a pink bike on it too. Even with that update to our order, AweSum Cakes was flexible and said it wasn't a problem! The cake turned out AMAZING! And most importantly, my daughter loved it!
We decided to do a Mickey themed cake for our one-year old's birthday. We thought since our only trip in 2020 was to California for a wedding, it made sense. We had so many other trips planned but we stayed in Sweden due to the Pandemic. The Vegan birthday cake from AweSum Cakes was just perfect! We even ordered 2 cupcakes for each of the kidd since we just celebrated together.
Remember to support your local businesses, especially during this Pandemic.
A huge thank you to AweSum Cakes!! If you're in Göteborg, definitely treat yourself to some cupcakes or a custom cake to help celebrate a birthday! If you're visiting Göteborg in the future, stop by and see what's available that day - there are always cupcakes and treats to choose from. Plus, they make great snacks. Happy St. Patrick's Day and remember, don't forget your snacks!

I was a bit hesitant to go on the ice first, so I waited and watched the scene. There were so many others out on the ice for a long time and the temperature had been way below freezing the last few days. Some were skating, others walking or standing. I decided to go out on it too since who knew when it would be like this again. It was such a cool experience seeing the frozen leaves under the ice just below your feet.
One of the ponds we walked on is by the Villa Belparc restaurant in the Slottsskogen, and the other pond was on the way there by the other cafe, Björngårdsvillan. The little ones had so much fun playing on the frozen ponds. Sliding on it, making snow angels, or just walking on it. There were even some people even playing Hockey when we first got there.Slottsskogen

One year ago on March 13th, I got a message from a friend to say that there were more people shopping at the grocery store at a time, when it was usually just her.
We had returned from our trip to the California a couple weeks before. I had kept both kids home from daycare because they had colds and then we heard about the growing Corona cases around the world and how it was now a Pandemic. The kids actually ended up staying home from March until school started again in August. Sweden never locked down, so we did a lot of walks, playtime away from others and just exploring our neighbourhood (where we live we don't need a car and we stopped taking the tram to avoid infection). We also got the baby an activity seat, so he could bounce around at home. We stocked up on crafts/art supplies for the todller, did more baking, and thankfully the weather was getting warmer so we even hung out on our balcony blowing bubbles and having 'tea parties' with real cupcakes ;)
